 WORLD
BUSINESS FORUM for the UNITED NATIONS Habitat II Conference, “Enterprise,
the City and Sustainable Development”, Istanbul, May 30-June 1, 1996,
the first global meeting of progressive enterprise, organised at the invitation
of Dr. Wally N’Dow, Executive Director, United Nations Centre for Human
Settlements. The first UN Conference to include business as a full-fledged
partner, it was attended by 320 top executives from businesses such as
Volvo, Honeywell, Dow, ABB, Mitsubishi, Bankers Trust, Pfizer, Apple Computers,
CH2M Hill, CNN, Coopers & Lybrand, Good Year, EDS, Repola, Emlak Bank
& Pazarlama, US BIOTECH, Carl-Bro, Levi Strauss, Oticon, Merloni SPA,
Skanska AB; international agencies such as the World Bank, I.L.O., UNDP,
UNIDO, UNEP, Eco-Med, ICLEI, IULA; think-tanks such as Demos and COMEDIA;
non-profits such as The
Getty Conservation Institute, Common Purpose, and progressive business
networks such as the Prince of Wales Business Leaders Forum, World Business
Academy, Social Venture Network, International Network for Environmental
Management INEM, European Baha’í Business Forum, Minnesota Center for
Corporate Responsibility, European Business Network for Social Cohesion.
The Forum’s resolution on responsible busi-ness made history by being
incorporated into the UN documentation - the first time ever. It set the
agenda for succeeding resolutions by other business bodies, such as the
World Business Council for Sustainable Development in its 1998 deliberations,
the World Economic Forum in its 1997, 1998 and 1999 fora, and the International
Chamber of Commerce in its joint statements with Kofi Annan’s office in
1998 and 1999. Progressio was responsible for the whole event, including
funding.

BEST PRACTICES LUNCHEON, United Nations, New York City, October 28th 1996,
to present 10 ‘Corporate Awards for Best Practices’ in Sustainable Business
and the City. Awards granted to Mitsubishi Electric USA, the Affordable
Housing Design Corporation, Gündlach Hannover, Honeywell Europe, Volvo,
among others.
INTERNATIONAL
CONFERENCE “Business and Municipality - New Partnerships for the 21st
Century”, March 13-15, 1997, Bremen, Germany. Principal partner with the
City of Bremen, ICLEI (International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives)
and ECONTUR. With IULA, North-South Centre Europe, European Commission
DG XI, UN Centre for Human Settlements, German and international organisations
of city mayors and business executives.
